Living with Estrangement
You want to stop relitigating a decision you already made and find a steadier way to live with the estrangement day to day.
You cut contact, or they did, and the relief and the guilt keep trading places. Over 14 days, you'll spend time with what it is actually like to live estranged: the doubt that returns every few weeks, relatives passing messages back and forth, holidays and milestones, and what you say when a stranger asks about your family. This Path will not push you toward reconciliation, and it will not reopen a question you already answered. It is here to help you carry the decision, not review it.
Start this pathWhere it goes
This journey is for people living with family estrangement, whether you made the call or they did. Over 14 days, you'll work with the feelings that keep cycling back and the moments in ordinary life where the absence shows up, without reopening the question you already answered.
The approach
ACT
This journey asks you to sit with hard, conflicting feelings without trying to resolve them, and to name what living with estrangement actually looks like. That's ACT's willingness work plus the structured reflection that expressive writing does well.
KindMind is an online journal with tools for self-discovery and growth. We draw on these approaches because they hold up well in self-guided work. This is not treatment, and it is not a substitute for working with a therapist or counselor when that is the right call.
Day by day
14 short sessions, in order. The guide walks each one with you and adapts it to what you bring.
Part 1: The Weather Inside
What living with the estrangement feels like from the inside: the oscillation, the returning doubt, the grief for someone still alive, and the apology that is not coming.
The Decision Already Made
You'll name what led to the estrangement and what you need this journey to do.
Relief and Guilt Trading Places
You'll work with the way relief and guilt take turns, without trying to fix either.
Being the One Cut Off
You'll explore what it's like when someone else ended contact and you're left holding it.
The Doubt That Comes Back
You'll make room for the doubt that arrives every so often without reopening everything.
The Loss Without a Death
You'll sit with grief that has no funeral, no closure, and no shared story.
The Apology That Isn't Coming
You'll notice what you're still waiting to hear and what happens when it won't come.
Check-in: What Keeps Returning
You'll reflect on which feelings and questions keep returning, and what that tells you.
Part 2: The World Around It
Everyone else: relatives in the middle, unsolicited opinions, strangers, holidays, and the contingencies you have not let yourself plan for.
Relatives Who Carry Messages
You'll decide how to handle relatives who try to carry messages or broker peace.
Opinions You Didn't Ask For
You'll practice responding to people who think they know what you should do.
When a Stranger Asks
You'll find language for the moment a stranger asks about your family in small talk.
Holidays and Milestones
You'll plan for holidays and milestones where the absence becomes most visible.
If They Reach Out Again
You'll think through what you'd do if the estranged person reached out tomorrow.
The Call You Might Get
You'll prepare for the call that might come when someone is sick or dying.
Living Alongside the Absence
You'll name what living alongside this absence actually looks like for you going forward.
